Servite High School’s baseball team was expected to be one of the top contenders in the Trinity League this year.  Unfortunately, they were off to a slow start with a record of 12-14-2 overall and a 4-7-1 record in league play.

The Friars started off the season 4-7 with two doubleheader sweeps by Villa Park and Edison. Stats indicated that the starting pitching was one of the main causes of this slow start.  The three starting pitchers, Nigel Ward, Mike Flynn, and Sean Paquet, struggled to start off the year. They had trouble with command and with pitching with a lead. But things started to change once they started the Lions Tournament.

The Friars went on to have a great Spring Break where they went 4-0-1 in the Lions Tournament. Ward, Flynn, and Paquet dominated and hitters came up clutch. That week helped the Friars get back on their feet as they entered league with a record of 8-7-1.

The team entered league on a hot streak that would continue as Matthew Woinarowicz got a walk-off single that led the Friars to a 2-1 victory over Orange Lutheran in the League opener. But OLU would respond in a big way. They won game two 16-4.  The Friars could not recover from the beating. They would go on to lose the last game of the series as well as the next series to St. John Bosco 2 games to 1.  This led Servite to a three-game series against Santa Margarita with a league record of 2-4.

Paquet had a dominant performance in game one of the series, going six shutout innings. He came out of the game with a 1-0 lead.  Mike Frias was able to throw a 1,2,3 seventh inning to get the save, and the Friars took game one 1-0.  Even though they won the first game Santa Margarita would rally to beat Servite 2-1 with pitching struggles and no timely hitting.  After the devastating loss, Nigel Ward put the team on his back and threw a Complete Game (CG) victory in the final game of the series.  “It was, in every respect, a complete game.  Our defense played really well, and our hitters hit well.  Our pitching dominated as well.  The game showed what we can do, which is to dominate every aspect of the game.” Nigel said about the team’s performance. Servite would win the series and record a record of 12-12-1; 4-5.

Even after their slow start, Servite is still in contention to win league and to make it to the CIF playoffs, but it will be a tough road, they must beat one of the best teams in the state, if not the nation, JSerra.

In the first game of the JSerra series, the two teams would tie after playing 13 innings. Paquet and Ward combined for ten innings and two runs allowed. This dominant pitching kept Servite in the game until the sun went down. After a total of three hours and fifty minutes, the game was called a tie, 2-2. In the game, two of the series costly errors led the Friars to a 3-1 defeat. On the third and final game of the series, the Friars lost 7-0. This puts Servite in a tough hole. They must win all of the three games next week against Mater Dei to make it to CIF playoffs.

Despite great pitching in the first two games by Flynn and Paquet, the Friars were not able to hit with runners on, which led them to two 3-2 losses. This officially ended the baseball season for the Servite Friars. Senior Bobby Vasquez said, “Even though the season has not gone the way we all wanted it to go statistically, we’ve all enjoyed being together and enjoyed seeing each other’s successes.”
